What’s Your True Age?
The age you feel may very well be the most important factor determining your health, happiness, and longevity. In my research on physical changes and identity, I’ve consistently found that the people who are happiest and best adjusted in their middle and later years are the ones who don’t focus on their limitations, worry about their memories, or become preoccupied with whether others view them as old. Being able to subtract a few years from this subjective age, or age that you feel, may actually buy you a few more objective years of healthy and productive life.

And these are only a few of the many wide range of health problems and concerns exercise impacts in a positive manner.

How We’re Never Too Old To Pursue Something New
“Age is just a number.” “It’s only too late to change your life when you’re six feet underground.” Platitudes like these are easy to say when you’re younger, but as time creeps past and the years ahead of you start becoming fewer and fewer than the ones behind you, it can be harder and harder to see that limitlessness of possibility. Yet, it remains nevertheless.
The Impossible Dream
As Andy Williams counseled in his timeless song, “Dream the impossible dream.” What is your dream? What have you always wanted to do or learn to do? Whatever it was, whatever your reasons for not pursuing it before, you have your chance now. Don’t squander it. At this age, you know more than most how precious time is.
Why Now May Be the Best Time
In truth, now, in your later years, might be the perfect time to pursue something new. You have a myriad of resources both internal and external that you may not have possessed before and the lack of which may have held you back from pursuing it before.
With age often comes confidence and a greater sense of self. You’ve already made an abundance of mistakes over the years, which gives you the awareness to avoid making similar ones as you explore this new pursuit.
Chances are you also have some practical resources as well that can help you excel in this pursuit, perhaps even better and faster than had you started earlier. You may have some savings or disposable income to draw on for lessons, materials or transportation, for instance. You may have more free time to devote to a new pursuit than you did before.
Excuses or Adjustments
Sure, you could probably come up with a plethora of reasons why you believe it’s too late to pursue your dream now. You’re out of shape. Your eyes, ears, fingers or coordination isn’t like it used to be anymore. Your mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Whatever the reasons are, however, they’re no more than excuses. You may have to adjust your dream a little to suit your current conditions, certainly. Maybe you’ll have to play touch football instead of tackle football. Maybe you’ll have to use a magnifying glass to crochet. Maybe you’ll have to cut back on the time or intensity you devote to your chosen activity in a given session. Then again, maybe you won’t. One thing for certain is you’ll never know until you try.
Examples to Live By
Hollywood has delivered us an endless supply of movies, TV shows and documentaries celebrating the glories of growing old and giving audiences hope for a life that continues to bloom even as the seasons pass.
Consider The Intern, starring Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Rene Russo. In this 2015 dramedy with the tagline “Experience never gets old,” De Niro plays a 70-year-old widower seeking a new lease on life. So, he gets himself hired as a senior intern for a fashion website. Don’t let the comedic nature of the film fool you, though. Far from a mere setup for fish-out-of-water jokes, this storyline touches at the core of the slew of emotions, challenges and rewards of allowing oneself to become a neophyte again for the goal of self-discovery and living a fuller, richer and more fulfilled life. Stream The Intern on Apple TV.
The 2012 dramedy Quartet is another one. Here, Maggie Smith plays a retired opera diva given a chance to do what she loves for the sheer joy of it, even though she’s long past her prime. Stream Quartet on Hulu, Netflix, Sling TV and fuboTV.
Other great films that provide excellent examples of people defying age to explore new possibilities and live life to the fullest include:
- Young @ Heart
- Song for Marion
- The Bucket List
- If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast
- I’ll See You in My Dreams
- The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared
- Saving Grace
- Harry and Tonto
- Up
- Calendar Girls
